Let me go boys, let me go boys by the Pogues in Subaru ad

The song in the Subaru ad featuring three young hockey players being ferried safely around by their hockey mom is by The Pogues.

To see the ad check out:http://www.aolradioblog.com/2010/10/30/subaru-forester-hockey-mom-commercial-whats-the-song/

When you hear the song in the ad its seems fairly innocuous and the boys are cute.

Did no one really research this?  Do they really want music from a band which was originally know as Pogue Mahone an Anglicized version of the Irish for "kiss my arse." (Wikipedia)  Further the title of the song is  If I should fall from Grace with God.  To get the full lyrics go to:

The first verse and chorus are as follows:

If I should fall from grace with God
Where no doctor can receive me.
If I'm buried 'neath the sod
But the angels won't receive.

Let me go boys
Let me go boys
Let me go down in the mud
Where the rivers all run dry.

The first three lines of the chorus are what we hear best in the ad while the little boys knock the bejeesus out of each other on the ice.. When I heard the music, I went, "I know that."  I thought it might have been from the Maritime Provinces of Canada, specifically Cape Breton, since although it sounded Celtic it was not traditional.  Of course, I had to find out who, what, and where.  Now, it is a catchie tune and if you ignore what the whole lyric means you can pretend its about these little boys playing hockey dudes until mum takes them home while they sleep in the back seat, all neat and tidy and safe.  But knowing the whole song really puts a damper on that safe image since its really saying "die and go to hell."  Is this really really what Subaru had in mind?  They have got to be paying royalties to at least  Shawn MacGowan the writer of the song and lead singer for The Pogues, if not the whole band since it is them singing.  MacGowan himself was one of the Irish badboys of the 1980s and 1990s.

His need for dental work alone would frighten the average American hockey mom into mild hysterics if she ran into him at the rink.  So, what WERE they thinking ?  Stay tuned for MrP's favorite new ad.
